Edinburgh’s Channings Hotel is inviting pupils at local schools to create their own dish that will appear on the restaurant menu in the build-up to the London 2012 Olympics.
Karen Higgins, Head Chef at the hotel which is located in South Learmonth Gardens, said: ‘With the growth in the amount of cookery programmes that are now on television, young people are more interested in recipes, food and how it is sourced. We have heard from parents whose children are budding chefs, teachers with pupils who are keen to enter and from young people who are considering chef as a career and see this as a good opportunity to learn more.
‘I’m looking forward to welcoming one young chef into my kitchen to work alongside me and then to see their dish on our menu.’
The judging panel will by chaired by Ngaire Stanaway, General Manager at Channings and include Karen Higgins, Ricky Kapoor, Commercial Director of the Edinburgh Collection and Forth One presenter, Grant Stott. He said, ‘Edinburgh has developed a great reputation for restaurants and alongside them we have some fabulous local shops selling locally sourced foods. This is a great opportunity for a young chef to showcase their skills and the Olympic theme gives them an additional challenge. I’m sure we’re going to see entries from potential chefs of tomorrow.’
