THE former manager of The Fountain in Edinburgh has been appointed as the new area manager for the Shilling Group.

The independent Edinburgh pub operator made the announcement earlier this week, unveiling John Duncan as successor to the throne.

He will now fill the role after his former bar was acquired by the Group in 2012. Jim oversaw the redesign and redevelopment of The Fountain, steering it to become the company’s top-trading unit.

Of the promotion, founder of the group, Michael McGuigan said, “What qualified John best for the role is his industry experience and his knowledge of our own operations. Another huge factor in our decision is that he understands trends and where the industry is heading and has a great clear vision of where the company can go.”

Joining the group in 2007, Jim also managed two other premises – the Carrier’s Quarters and Bar Kohl – before overseeing The Fountain’s transformation into a modern bar brasserie.

He will now work with company directors on company strategy and new business development, ensuring compliance with licensing requirements, managing product procurement and the implementation of staff training.

He will also oversee all 11 outlets in the Shilling portfolio. With 106 staff, the group is on course to record a turnover of £5.2m in the next 12 months.
