Greene King goes greener

Greene King – owner of Belhaven – will offer greener Christmas crackers to its customers this Christmas across its 1,700 pubs.

The brewer  replace all single use plastic contents from its crackers with gifts made from sustainable sources such as metal, wood and paper, and the crackers themselves are also made using recyclable material. And, with its customers pulling almost 1.4million crackers this year, the changes will make a substantial difference to its aim of reducing single use plastic.

Phil Thomas, chief commercial officer at Greene King, said, “Christmas is a busy time for our pubs and last year we sold 154,000 meals on Christmas Day alone, so we wanted to find a more sustainable way for our customers to enjoy the traditional Christmas cracker.

“We are really passionate about reducing our waste and, as we continue to strive to reduce single use plastics in our business, we’re pleased to have been able to produce a greener solution to the traditional Christmas cracker.”
