Midhope Castle Distillery Company has applied to West Lothian Council to build a new malt distillery on the Hopetoun Estate, South Queesnsferry (pictured). The plans also include the eventual restoration of a 16th century ruin.
Former director of corporate relations for Diageo, Ken Robertson, is listed as one of the directors of Midhope Castle Distillery Company along with Julia Hall Mackenzie-Gilanders and Ann Medlock, owners of whisky bottling company Golden Decanters. Their Perth-based operation provides Scotch whisky collectors with limited edition malts.
The distillery would use only malting barley grown at Hopetoun Estate and would be designed by Edinburgh-based 56three Architects.
The estate is next to Midhope Castle, a 16th-century tower house which features as the fictional Lallybroch, the family home of Jamie Fraser in the TV series Outlander.
After departing Diageo in 2012, Ken Robertson now runs his own company, Ken Robertson Associates.
