The UK is the first country in the world to approve the roll out of the Pfizer/BioNTech coronavirus vaccine after British regulator, the MHRA, said the jab, which offers up to 95% protection against Covid-19, was safe to use. The UK has already ordered 40m doses, enough to vaccinate 20m people.
It took only 10 months to develop whereas usually this process can take up to ten yeas.
Immunisations could start within days for elderly and other vulnerable patients and also top of the list are care home residents and staff, people over 80 and other health and social care workers.
They will receive the first stocks of the vaccine and mass immunisation of everyone over 50, as well as younger people with pre-existing health conditions, will happen as more stocks become available in 2021.
It’s administered in two injections, 21 days apart, with the second dose being a booster and it takes a few weeks for immunity to build.
