The Macallan has announced the latest addition to its Archival Series, Folio 7, which celebrates the brand’s classic advertising campaigns. This instalment highlights a 1984 campaign that tells the whimsical tale of a group of scientists visiting The Macallan Distillery to taste its single malt whisky for the first time.
The animated advertisements show the scientists in awe as they enjoy a signature dram, trying to understand why whisky ages best in sherry seasoned casks. The Archival Series, which first launched in 2015, pays tribute to The Macallan’s legendary print, press, and film advertisements from the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s. Each release in the series captures the essence of the brand’s journey from a humble farmstead on the River Spey to a globally recognised whisky, known for its craftsmanship and creativity.
Art Director David Holmes and Copywriter Nick Salaman, along with illustrator Mary Hogan (Nee Roberts), were responsible for bringing the 1984 advert to life. Inspired by the account of the scientists’ visit to The Macallan Estate, they crafted the vibrant ad “The Boffins Baffled,” now reimagined in Folio 7.
Euan Kennedy, Lead Whisky Maker at The Macallan, commented on the release: “Folio 7 is a captivating single malt whisky that truly reflects the iconic status of the artwork it celebrates. With a fruity nose of apple and pear, followed by raisins, milk chocolate, and orange peel, it gives way to vanilla and baked fruits on the palate, leaving a long, creamy finish with warm spices. Folio 7 offers a unique way to experience The Macallan and one of its most unforgettable advertising campaigns from decades past.”
Priced at £350, The Macallan Folio 7 has an ABV of 43% and comes with a special booklet celebrating the brand’s vintage advertising. The whisky is presented in a book-shaped tin and will be available for sale starting this month through a ballot on The Macallan Online Boutique, as well as at The Macallan Estate Boutique and selected global travel retail boutiques.
