Japanese Izakaya experience restaurant, Mikaku, is adding to its range with it’s new Robata Grill Bar which opens this weekend to offer a later night food option to customers at its Queen Street venue.

‘Robata’, short for ‘robatayaki’ (炉端焼き), translates as ‘fireside cooking’, similar to barbecuing. Originating in Hokkaido – a northern prefecture in Japan – the style of cooking was devised by fishermen from traditional tea ceremonies conducted on an open fire pit.

Mikaku explain that cooking on a robata grill is a fine art, since these grills are very hot and the temperature cannot be adjusted. It means that their chefs have learned under the tutelage of our Executive Chef, Joe Grant, previously Head Chef at Issho in Leeds.

Joe Grant said, “We’re delighted to be offering a brand new, late night food option for our customers. The Robata Grill is a traditional Japanese cooking method, and it results in incredible tasty skewers perfect to pair with Mikaku’s delicious cocktail menu.

“From using the whole of the chicken – from thigh to heart, as well as importing A5 Wagyu Beef straight from Japan, we’ll be sure to be tantalising tastebuds straight from our new Robata Grill Bar.”

The Robata Grill Bar opens tonight, Friday 8 March, and will be open Wednesday – Sunday. It will also be serving cocktails.
