One of Scotland’s best loved hotels goes on the market after 164 year in the same family

The George

One of Scotland’s best-known and best-loved hotels The George Hotel in Inveraray has gone on the market after 164 years in the Clark family.

The hotel, a former winner of the Sunday Mail Pub of the Year accolade, has been owned by the Clark family since 1860 and current owner Kris Clark took over from his late father Donald, when he stepped back from the business.

The Grade A historic and listed building has been restyled over the years in keeping with the building, its history and its architecture, and now boasts a pub, cocktail bar, restaurant and 17 bedrooms with a further 8 rooms in The First House.

Owner Kris Clark, said, “The George Hotel has been part of the family since 1860, six generations committed to providing an authentic and quality product in hospitality and weave a little more magic into the beautiful historic town of Inveraray.

“The family have decided that the time is right to hand on the baton to a new generation to continue the legacy of one of the most iconic hotels in Scotland.“

Graeme Smith from Smith and Clough, who is handling the sale, alongside Brian Sheldon at Christie & Co,  said, “It is an absolute pleasure to bring the George Hotel Inveraray to the market, for the very first time in its long history. Regarded as one of the finest and best-established hotels in Scotland, with a worldwide reputation, it has been owned and carefully run by the Clark family since 1860. This unique and highly awarded hotel is presented in excellent condition throughout – full of character, charm and history that is second to none. International interest in this opportunity is guaranteed. Both Brian and I are expecting high levels of activity from multiple operators and single-purchase buyers looking for a trophy asset. The George Hotel is an authentic piece of Scottish history, perfectly set within the highly regarded and historic town of Inveraray, on the shores of Loch Fyne and a once in a lifetime opportunity.

Brian Sheldon, Regional Director of Christie & Co added, “ We are delighted to be working alongside Smith and Clough on this first-class assignment. The George Hotel is an established family business located within the Royal Burgh of Inveraray, the ancestral seat of the Duke of Argyll, which is available to purchase for the first time since 1860.”
