Glasgow institution, Café d’Jaconelli on Maryhill Road, has reopened just seven weeks after a fire threatened its existence.  The fire, which broke out on September 12, cast uncertainty over the future of the 100-year-old café, with many residents fearing it might not reopen. However, thanks to the incredible support from the community and the determined efforts of owner James Evans and his team, the doors have swung open once again.

Posting on Facebook, the team shared a heartfelt message, expressing gratitude to all who helped during the challenging period, “Thank you, thank you, thank you. It’s been an unbelievable seven weeks. We are so grateful for all the kind words, messages, visits, and especially to those who donated on JustGiving. We have created a special thank-you display in the shop to honour all the generous supporters.”

For nearly a century, Café d’Jaconelli has been a much-loved feature of Glasgow’s cultural landscape and its interiors have graced screens in classic films and TV shows, including Trainspotting and Tutti Frutti, where it became a nostalgic backdrop, attracting celebrities like Sir Billy Connolly. The restoration, which brought new life to the café’s iconic red leatherette seats, 1950s booths, and vintage jukebox, was made possible with the help of local tradespeople, including West End Cabinet Makers and Project Rewire electricians.
