Gordon & MacPhail releases final edition in Mr George Legacy Series

Gordon & MacPhail

Gordon & MacPhail has released the final whisky in its Mr George Legacy Series – a 70-Year-Old single malt distilled at Glen Grant Distillery, with only 130 bottles available globally.

The limited edition marks the 130th anniversary of the company and celebrates George Urquhart, known as ‘Mr George’, a second-generation member of the family behind the business, who was instrumental in building the reputation of single malt Scotch whisky.

Distilled on 24 April 1954 and matured for 70 years in a first-fill sherry puncheon (cask no. 1823), the whisky was bottled in January 2025 at a cask strength of 50.5%. It is priced at £8,000.

The whisky features fruity notes with vanilla fudge and coffee on the nose, followed by red apple, walnut, dried orange peel, dark chocolate and toasted oak on the palate.

This fifth and final release in the series follows earlier editions from Glen Grant, a distillery Mr George is said to have had a particular fondness for. The packaging has been designed to reflect his approach to maturation and cask selection.

In the late 1960s, Mr George launched the Connoisseurs Choice range, which has since included over 2,000 releases from almost 100 distilleries.

Stuart Urquhart, Operations Director at Gordon & MacPhail, said, “The fifth and final release from the Mr George Legacy Series is the perfect tribute to my grandfather’s lifetime of work, which still impacts our approach today. As we celebrate our 130th anniversary, we not only honour the past but also inspire future generations to continue the innovation and craftsmanship championed by ‘Mr George’.

“As a fourth-generation, family-owned business, we want to commemorate our historic roots and while the Mr George Legacy Series may culminate with this release, my grandfather’s quest for perfection lives on within Gordon & MacPhail.”
