First Minister, John Swinney, has officially opened Luss Distillery, the new multi-million-pound distillery and visitor experience by Loch Lomond Group, located in the heart of one of the country’s busiest tourism destinations.
Described by the company as one of the most significant whisky tourism investments in recent years, the purpose-built site sits at the gateway to the Highlands and is expected to attract up to one million visitors in 2026. It combines a working distillery with dedicated whisky and gin discovery areas, a tasting room, café, and retail space showcasing the full Loch Lomond Group portfolio — including Glen Scotia and Littlemill single malts, premium spirits, and Champagne.
During his visit, the First Minister unveiled a commemorative plaque and praised the development as a valuable addition to Scotland’s tourism and drinks sectors. “The distillery and visitor centre not only adds to the quality of the tourism offering in Luss but also to Scotland’s international reputation as a world class destination,” he said. “This investment by Loch Lomond Group is extremely welcome, particularly when there are serious challenges impacting on the whisky sector, both at home and abroad.”
Colin Matthews, Founder and CEO of Loch Lomond Group and Council Member of the Scotch Whisky Association, said, “At Luss Distillery, we have brought together Scotland’s natural beauty, our passion for spirits, and a commitment to delivering a truly memorable destination. It is a real privilege to have the First Minister visit as we look ahead to a busy spring and summer season.”
The design and concept for the distillery was led by Paul Hodgkiss Designs, working with Diverse Contracts and brand experience agency Hot Pickle.
To mark the occasion, the First Minister was presented with a personalised bottle of Loch Lomond 14-Year-Old Luss Exclusive Cask – one of just 291 produced and available only at the new distillery.
Matthews concluded, “Scotland’s spirits sector is facing challenging times, which makes continued investment more important than ever. As one of the largest independent distillers in Scotland, we remain steadfast in our commitment to quality, history, authenticity and innovation. We call on the First Minister and colleagues across the political spectrum to continue their strong support for this great historic industry and the meaningful contribution it makes to Scotland and the wider UK.”
