Hospitality Health, the Scottish charity supporting those working in hospitality, is encouraging industry staff to go alcohol free this October as part of a new campaign called OctSober.
The initiative, which also aims to raise funds for the charity, was inspired by alcohol-free coach David Carson, who worked in hospitality for 25 years.
“Hospitality is a very demanding industry, and it is all too easy to rely on alcohol to take the edge off things, which can in turn hinder day-to-day performance,” said David. “Having previously been a regular drinker, I know this only too well.”
“Taking a month-long break from alcohol offers numerous benefits for the body, mind and overall well-being. Many people experience less stress, better sleep and more energy, which most hospitality staff are crying out for. A break can also lead to enhanced clarity, improved focus and better emotional stability, especially for those in leadership roles.”
“This in turn contributes to increased motivation and productivity during the day. Memory and cognitive function may also sharpen, as the brain is no longer hindered by the depressant effects of alcohol. Ultimately, committing to an alcohol-free month is a powerful act of self-care that supports both immediate health benefits and long-term wellness.”
Participants will be encouraged to showcase their venue’s alcohol-free options to highlight that the industry is taking wellness seriously. David added, “Businesses should look at what they have to offer the alcohol-free customer. The quality of alcohol-free beers and lagers has improved greatly. Customers who may avoid venues for fear of failing may be more inclined to visit if they see staff taking part.”
Jump/Ship Brewing is backing the campaign. Founder Sonja Mitchell said, “What a great initiative. As a dedicated alcohol-free brewery, we’re committed to giving non-drinkers the best possible choices. I hope our beers will help satisfy the thirst of those participating in this campaign for Hospitality Health.”
Participants can also be sponsored by colleagues, friends and family to raise funds for the charity.
Gordon McIntyre MBE, founding Chairman of Hospitality Health, said, “When David made the suggestion, it was a no brainer. The campaign aligns perfectly with what we are doing in promoting wellness within the industry. It is a win win. The individual taking part in OctSober will feel a huge benefit in their wellbeing, and in turn Hospitality Health will receive funds to support the industry in other ways. It is a collaboration I am sure we will have for years to come. Get it in your diary.”
A support presentation will take place on Monday 29 September at the Clayton Hotel on Glasgow’s Clydeside, with an online session also planned. Participants will receive support slides, a factsheet on the benefits of taking a break from alcohol and a toolkit to help overcome obstacles. Weekly Zoom calls and WhatsApp groups will also be set up by David Carson.
