Two leading figures in the Scotch whisky industry have been named as Keepers of the Quaich, the accolade that recognises outstanding commitment and contribution to Scotch whisky.

Lillian MacArthur, Distillery Administrator at Bunnahabhain Distillery on Islay, was recognised for 50 years of service, having joined the distillery at just 16. Born and raised on Islay, Lillian has spent her entire working life at Bunnahabhaina and in that time a still has been names in her honour and an exclusive limited edition bottle was released at global whisky festival Fèis Ìle 2025 called  Lillian’s Legacy.

Lillian said, “I’ve been incredibly lucky to spend my whole working life at Bunnahabhain and have seen it all. So much has changed, whilst at the same time, so much has stayed the same. The people here are like family, and the distillery has always felt like home. I have a real loyalty to the Bunnahabhain and I am incredibly proud to be part of its heritage.

“To be recognised as a Keeper of the Quaich is an honour and a privilege – one I don’t take lightly. When I started at Bunnahabhain aged 16, I never imagined that I’d still be here 50 years later, doing a job I truly love.”

Joining her is Greg Hughes, President and CEO of Suntory Global Spirits, who has also been named a Keeper in recognition of his leadership and influence within the global whisky industry.

Hughes first joined the company as General Manager for the U.S. market and was appointed CEO in October 2023. He now oversees a global portfolio that includes well-known Scotch brands Bowmore, Laphroaig and Teacher’s, alongside driving long-term brand development and heritage preservation.

“It is an honour to be named a Keeper of the Quaich, and to hold one of the most prestigious titles in the Scotch whisky industry,” he said.
“It’s the perfect way to mark ten years at Suntory Global Spirits and reflects the pride and passion I have in the heritage and craftsmanship in each of our brands, particularly those which make up our iconic Scotch portfolio.”
