The Tolbooth Tavern on Edinburgh’s Royal Mile has made an appearance in the new Netflix version of Frankenstein, directed by Oscar winner Guillermo del Toro.
Filming took place on Canongate, with the pub used as part of the street set. Its inclusion has brought fresh attention to the historic venue, which has stood on the Royal Mile since 1820 and is part of the original Canongate Tolbooth.
This isn’t the first time the Tolbooth has been used on screen. It also featured in scenes from Outlander and continues to be a popular stop for tourists, locals and film fans.
Known for its traditional Scottish dishes and use of local produce, the pub is located near several major city landmarks including Holyrood Palace and Edinburgh Castle.
A spokesperson for the Tolbooth said, “With the release of Frankenstein drawing renewed attention to Edinburgh as a film destination, Tolbooth Tavern is delighted to be a small part of the story. Night-time footage and fresh imagery of the pub’s movie signage will be captured this weekend to showcase how the filming appeared on set.”
