Glasgow-based pizzeria brand Paesano Pizza has had plans approved to launch a pasta concept restaurant called Sugo in the former Herald building on the city’s Mitchell Street. Sugo will open in the listed Charles Rennie Mackintosh-designed building in November, which first opened in 1895 as a newspaper office.
Owner Paul Stevenson told DRAM, “It will have 220 covers. The interior will have a slightly cleaner look, but will still be industrial with polished concrete floors and funky light fittings that look like Blade Runner meets Flash Gordon ray guns. The seating has distressed leather finishes and the Sugo sign has been made out of two-metre high neon letters, installed in a glass wall over the stairwell. There’ll be an emphasis on regional Italian pasta dishes and all pasta will be made on the premises.”
The group currently operates Paesano’s pizzerias in Miller Street and Great Western Road.
