Edinburgh’s Corn Exchange has been bought by Academy Music Group (AMG) – the company that runs O2 Academy venues across the UK – and will be rebranded as the O2 Academy Edinburgh from 1st September. It has invested in a new sound and lighting system in the 3000-capacity venue on New Market Road as part of plans to bring more concerts to the category B listed building.
It dates back to 1909, and was been transformed into a regular venue on the conference, concert and dinner circuit by former owner Marco’s Leisure.
It kicked off an era of live music with a sell-out show by Blur in 1999, and other major acts to perform at the venue include Foo Fighters, Biffy Clyro, Oasis, Coldplay, Faithless, Arctic Monkeys, Garbage, Grace Jones, Radiohead, Paulo Nutini, Pulp and Calvin Harris.
AMG has had a partnership agreement with O2 since January 2009. The Edinburgh Corn Exchange adds to the existing UK portfolio of 20 venues, including the O2 Academy Glasgow, the O2 Academy Brixton and O2 Shepherd’s Bush Empire.
