Minimum wage set to rise

The Low Pay Commission has recommended that the minimum wage rise to £6.50 an hour for adults (an increase of 3%) and to £5.13 an hour for workers aged 18-20 (an increase of 2%). The commission said it had to balance increased costs for businesses against doing more to help the lowest paid. Business Secretary Vince Cable said of the proposed rise, “It is faster than inflation and that is the first time in six years that has happened.”
The commission’s recommendations would come in on 1st October and include an increase of 2% for workers aged 18-20 to £5.13 an hour.
