The Counting House on Dumbarton High Street has closed for a six-figure refurbishment, with a planned reopening on 8 May. The B-listed building, a former British Linen Bank, is receiving a full internal and external refit, including a new sports zone with pool and darts.
The pub’s team said, “We have a fabulous team working around the clock to transform the Counting House. We’ll be back open next month with great sport, live music, a top drinks selection and plenty of good scran.”
The Dumbarton project sits within a wider programme of managed pub investment by Belhaven across Scotland. Belhaven invested almost £5 million across 22 managed, tenanted, and franchised pubs in 2025, a fourfold increase in the pace of refurbishment activity compared with the previous year. Previous managed investments under the same programme have included Molly Malones in Aberdeen, the Merlin in Edinburgh, and the Kittoch in East Kilbride, with an average spend of around £400,000 per managed site.
David McBride, Belhaven Pubs business unit director, said in January, “Scottish hospitality is renowned, and we have many historic and iconic pubs here full of stories and memories for so many people. Despite the ongoing economic and legislative challenges and costs of doing business, we have a duty of care to our pubs, pub teams, customers and communities to make sure we offer the best possible service and experience in our pubs so investment remains vital.”
