The Isle of Skye Brewing Co has announced it has bought The Griffin in Glasgow saying on its Facebook page “We’ve only gone and bought a pub!” as they revealed that they had also taken their first delivery in over two years ahead of a reopening on Thursday the 8th of September. The pub will offer the full range of cask, draught, and bottled beers from the Skye Brewing Co.
The Griffin, which first opened in 1903 in Bath Street is one of Glasgow’s most well-known pubs and is a popular haunt with theatre goers who attend shows at The Kings Theatre across the street. It closed its doors on March 2020 and was put up for let earlier this year.
The new owners, who announced on their Facebook page earlier in August “we are back” also say, “Today this beautiful bar, diner and venue enters a new era as one of Glasgow’s much loved institutions, with new independent owners investing in its future. Everything that is special and loved stays the same – including the legendary chicken goujon!
“A restoration programme, new amazing function spaces, the launch of a new menu and a range of new ales, beers, gins and whiskies are all being introduced.”
Isle of Skye Brewing was set-up by two Portree High School teachers at a time when there were only six small independent breweries in Scotland and none is Skye. By 1995 they were ready to brew their first ale – Red Cuillin, now called Skye Red.
It was bought by Kenneth Webster in 2013 and since then they have rebranded and introduced new lines, and sales have grown. Its range of 12 ales includes Skye Gold, Red, Black, Blaven, Yer Ben, and new Skye Craft lager. In 2019 they bought Black Wolf Brewery near Stirling which brought with it ownership of Black Wolf’s brewing and bottling facility as well as its range of beers – which included Rok IPA, Lomond Gold and 1488.
