Dundee’s live music scene is set to get a shot in the arm as the iconic venue, Clark’s, prepares to reopen its doors this summer after more than three years of closure due to Covid-19. Owner Scott Clark, along with Sean Bennett, a partner at the nearby Captain’s Cabin, decided to breathe new life into the much-loved bar, which was once one of Dundee’s top live music venues. The revival of Clark’s marks the beginning of a new chapter in the history of the building, which originally opened as Lindsay Street Mill in the early 1870s.
Clark’s on Lindsay Street first opened in 2011 and quickly became a staple in Dundee’s music scene, hosting numerous up-and-coming bands and big acts including China Crisis. The decision to revive the venue was inspired by the success of “pop-up” events held at the Captain’s Cabin since last November. These events not only showcased the live music scene but also helped keep the Clark’s name alive in the hearts of music lovers.
Scott negotiated reasonable rent terms with the landlord, paving the way for the bar’s reopening after walking past it one day and realising that there were no plans for the venue which was still unused. The plan is to continue offering the same buzzing atmosphere and fantastic music that made Clark’s a local institution. Live bands will perform on Saturday nights from 6 pm to 10 pm, followed by a club-like atmosphere with DJs for those who prefer a late-night experience without going to nightclubs.
Sean Bennett will join Scott as co-owner and focus on developing the late-night vibe, while Scott will concentrate on earlier events. The venue will introduce early afternoon paying gigs, touring bands, and tribute acts once it’s up and running. The duo aims to cater to a diverse audience, from those who prefer an early night out to younger customers looking for a late night club vibe,
Sean and Scott said on Scotts facebook page. “So, 3 yrs after Covid kicked us out of 80 North Lindsay Street, we’re delighted to say that we’re going back in & hope you’ll come too!
“We’re not planning to change too much – hopefully we can pick up where we left off with great people, a buzzing atmosphere and brilliant music. It feels as if we were asked to leave the party too soon last time!
“One important addition is Mr Sean Bennett who joins me as co-owner and who will focus on developing a chilled late night vibe for those who stay out late but don’t go to night clubs.
“Not sure when we’ll be ready to open – should make it by the start of June and maybe a bit sooner.
“We don’t know if we’re in this for the short, medium or long-term – quite simply, it depends how it goes.
“These are tough times for businesses and customers, but let’s give it a go together.”
With repairs and staff recruitment underway, Clark’s hopes to recapture the magic that made it a beloved part of Dundee’s music scene and cement its status as a must-visit destination for music lovers far and wide.
