The Southern Bar in Edinburgh, a former bikers’ pub renowned for hosting an impromptu gig by Nirvana’s Kurt Cobain and Dave Grohl in 1991, has been granted permission to host live music once again. The city council approved changes to the bar’s license, allowing bands and artists to play for the first time in over a decade.
Councillors unanimously supported the decision, citing a “desperate need for appropriate live music venues” in Edinburgh. The license was previously revoked around 2010 after a series of noise complaints.
Alistair McDonald, the solicitor representing the applicant, clarified that the new acts would differ from the legendary rock music once performed at the venue. The application specified the future performances would include “unplugged folk music and open mic events.”
