Edinburgh brewer Vault City has released a “Last Christmas” beer inspired by two of the 80s’ most loved creations: WHAM Bars and Wham! Wham!’s song Last Christmas was released 40 years ago this year, and it was kept off the Christmas top spot by Band Aid’s “Do They Know It’s Christmas?”, finally reaching number one on New Years Day 2021.
WHAM Bars were introduced by Scottish confectionery company McCowan’s in the early 1980s, reaching sales of 30 million bars per year at their peak, and, although sales have slowed in recent years, the sour beer producer has boiled down and infused the flavour of 500 Wham chew bars to brew a special Christmas beer.
Vault City co-founder Steven Smith-Hay said, “This infusion method intensifies the sweetness and flavours. Each sip feels incredibly nostalgic. The notes of sharp raspberry and a fizzy tang taste just like the sour chew bar I loved growing up.”
“Our love of sour beer is almost a match for our love of 80’s music, especially a Christmas classic so this felt like the perfect pairing!”
