New restaurant, The Tropical Café, hosted a colourful launch party in Glasgow’s Merchant City last weekend. The event certainly brought the flavour of the Caribbean to the city and was attended by family, influencers, and celebrities including Rangers legend Marvin Andrews.
Owned by Leo Flores and located at 51 Bell Street, the Trinidad and Tobago inspired restaurant offers authentic dishes including roti, doubles, jerk chicken and macaroni pie.
Guests at the opening were treated to Caribbean classics courtesy of chef Brian Thomas, who is originally from Trinidad and has worked in some of the Caribbean’s top restaurants. Cocktails included a special Rum Punch which is owner Leo’s personal recipe.
Owner, Leo told DRAM, “I’ve lived in Glasgow for 33 years and I started this journey because when I was entertaining friends at home, and they always told me I should open a restaurant.
“When I was offered this site in the Merchant city, I thought it was ideal. I wanted to bring something totally unique that was all about taste, flavours and using all the natural spices from the Caribbean. I even went to Trinidad to speak to the suppliers to ensure we were using all the authentic ingredients.
“We use recipes from all the Caribbean islands as I wanted to create a place in Glasgow for people who couldn’t go to the Caribbean. A place where people can chill out with authentic Caribbean food, good cocktails and listen to some great Caribbean music like soca and reggae. Things have been fantastic so far and we’ve had some great reviews from people who have said that there is nothing else like this in Glasgow.”
