A once derelict pub has been transformed into a vibrant community hub thanks to a collaboration between Star Pubs and Discovery Group, and new general manager Donna McCallum now at the helm.
Andrena Smith-Bowes, Director at Discovery Group and hospitality professional with a diploma in hospitality management and years of hands-on experience in hotels, her passion for the industry remains as strong today as it was then: “I loved it then and I still love it.”
In 2025, Andrena and the Discovery Group team partnered with Star Pubs to take on the management of a site that had been closed for six years. Previously known as The County Hotel, the venue has undergone a stunning £850,000 transformation and reopened as The Law, a name that nods to its North Berwick roots. The revamp is one of Star Pub’s largest since COVID and has created 25 new jobs, breathing life back into the local area.
The Law’s soft launch on September 15th significantly exceeded expectations, with 300 guests eager to experience the new venue. The official launch two days later wowed locals. The venue now features two distinct bars, a stylish restaurant, 11 ensuite hotel rooms and the largest beer garden in town. The design pays homage to North Berwick, with subtle local touches throughout.
Inside, the front bar offers a contemporary space with screens for major sporting events like the Six Nations and Ryder Cup. The Beach House bar, converted from a former stable, retains its original beams and stone walls and boasts a pizza oven and cocktail station. Two stable doors open onto a beautifully landscaped 100-seater garden, perfect for sunny afternoons and private events.
Upstairs, the restaurant is ideal for functions and each of the 11 themed bedrooms are named after a Scottish malt whisky, complete with artwork supplied by the iconic whisky brand. The food offering spans breakfast to dinner, with pub classics and seasonal specials made from locally sourced ingredients. Seafood is a highlight, reflecting the pub’s seaside location – and dogs are warmly welcomed with their own menu and treats.
The drinks menu features craft beers, whiskies, non-alcoholic options and an innovative cocktail list developed in collaboration with local suppliers – brought to life through tastings and customer experiences.
Andrena credits Star Pubs support and operational excellence for the success of the project. From responsive customer service to expert contractor coordination, the partnership has been seamless. The Law’s revival stands as a testament to what’s possible when passion meets investment and when old spaces are given the chance to shine again.
