JD Wetherspoon is expanding its presence in Glasgow with the launch of a new £1 million pub in Broomhouse, on the city’s eastern outskirts. Located on Hamilton Road, the venue opens next week and will create 60 new jobs. It takes over the former Beefeater Black Bear premises next to the Premier Inn Glasgow East hotel, just off the M74 on the outskirts of Uddingston.
The pub includes a ground-floor bar and a large, front-facing beer garden, and it will be managed by Kayleigh McMenemy, who leads a new team delivering food service until 11pm daily. The drinks selection includes real ales, traditional ciders, and a range of craft and world beers, with some sourced from local and regional brewers.
Although operating under the Wetherspoon brand, the venue will be run by the family-owned Papas Group under a franchise agreement. The group signed a 15‑pub UK-wide deal with JD Wetherspoon in September and is known for operating Wendy’s and Papa’s Fish and Chips, mainly in the north of England. Papas recently opened a Weatherspoon-branded pub in Lincoln on the former Gateway Park Brewers Fayre site.
For Wetherspoon’s, this sees further development of its franchise model, and where it has said that it plans to work with franchise partners as part of its strategy to grow to over 1,000 sites nationwide.
