UK record broken at Just Whisky Auction

Following an extended nail biting finish to Just Whisky’s July auction on July 21st, The Macallan 50 Year Old 1949 Millennium Decanter set a new UK auction record by achieving a 270 per cent increase on the bottle which was sold at auction in November 2015.

The 1949 Millennium Decanter, surpassed its £21,000 reserve price and pre-auction estimate of £22 – 26k, selling for £34,720 including buyer’s commission.

The Macallan 72 Year Old in Lalique headed up the auction and sold for an incredible £90,750. The retail price last year was $60,000 (£45,800 at the time USD>GBP) netting the seller   £45,000 profit.

Graham Crane, Director at Just Whisky, said,”We knew from the outset that this was going to be a special auction and last night’s figures demonstrated beyond doubt that there remains high demand for exceptional whiskies.

“With prices for rare whiskies only likely to rise, savvy investors are waking up to the returns to be made in quality whisky.”

The online auction contained over 1150 bottles of whisky. The top bids included:

  • The Macallan Range Rover bottle absolutely smashed through the reserve price of £900 and pre-auction estimate of £1,000 – 1300 with a winning bid of £4,850 making it over 3x the price of the car** and

  • The Macallan 52 Year Old sold for £59,500 (£66,640 including buyer’s premium), a £21,500 increase over the retail price.
