Coronavirus: Verdant Spirits switches production from gin to hand sanitiser

Verdant Spirits, based in Dundee, has switched production from gin to hand sanitiser following an appeal from local care groups in the wake of coronavirus. Starting this week, it hopes to produce 400 litres of the gel.

The company, which has two other distilleries in Aberdeenshire and the Highlands, is owned by Andrew Mackenzie who tracked down the ingredients listed on the World Health Organisation’s website.

He then put out a call on social media in order to source ingredients such as hydrogen peroxide and glycerine.

Andrew is still liable to pay duty on the alcohol used in the production of the hand sanitiser.
